This chapter has Phillip beginning to get it. He is starting to understand the relationship between how he thinks and what he thinks. It is also a time when they begin to study the book with different eyes. Our young dentist is beginning to understand that the function of something results in the way it looks and the outcome. Not just in jaws and teeth but life.
Phillip thinks he is further along than he really is. The bookbinder knows that his young confident student is ready for another setback but like all good teachers he allows his student to experience it himself. Knowing that the next lesson will be all that more meaningful.
