This chapter is about getting to know others and recognizing those same traits in you. Harris meets with Phillip as soon as possible, he knows this guy and how impatient he can be, a lesson that is lost on Phillip at this juncture. Our young dentist unloads on Harris and he can hardly get a word in. His propensity to talk too much is again lost on Phillip.
Here we delve into a very basic lesson in personality theory and personality types. Harristotle was arguably responsible for the original four personality types. Today we could call them Analytical, Expressive, Amiable, and Driver, these are from the book Social Styles, Management Styles. This is also found in the DISC and so many other personality test nomenclatures.
The key is to take people as they are. We do not want to be Procrustes; one size does not fit all!
In this chapter Phillip learns more about himself and sees in Harris that the more attuned you become to others styles the more you can flex to them to best enhance your communication. It is difficult to peg Harris’s personality type because he is a highly evolved human being and a master of communication. But from his lessons we can aspire to his levels.
The next chapter is another one of my favorites; I think one of the best lessons of the book.
See you out back!
